High powered committee to clear bottlenecks

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has appointed a high powered committee under the Chairmanship of Anura Bandaranaike, Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment Promotion.

This Committee would function as a central investment/project facilitation mechanism to effect speedy resolution of problems faced by investors, states an Industry, Tourism and Investor Promotion press release.

The members of the committee consists of Dr. Sarath Amunugama, M.P, Minister of Finance and Planning, Dinesh Gunawardena, M.P, Minister of Urban Development and Water Supply, Mangala Samaraweera, M.P, Minister of Ports and Aviation, Dr. P.B. Jayasundera, Secretary, Ministry of Finance and Planning, Dr. Upananda Vidanapathirana, Secretary, Ministry of Industry and Investment Promotion, Mano Tittawella, Senior Advisor to H.E. the President, Saliya Wickramasuriya, Chairman/Director General, Board of Investment of Sri Lanka and Nihal Sri Amarasekere Chairman/PERC.

As per the directive issued by the President the Committee has been entrusted to:

* Facilitate all bottlenecks vis a vis land acquisition, environmental clearance, local government and governmental approvals and other approvals for investment projects in the country.

* Study and facilitate projects that have been received at the President's Office and other governmental institutions and direct them to relevant authorities and ensure speedy implementation.

* Monitor, implement and ensure that deadlines are kept by relevant agencies.

* Pay particular attention to the renewable energy projects and ensure speedy implementation.

* Implement the relevant budget proposals which have direct and indirect impact on investments and development projects.

* Resolve any other problems or bottlenecks that may impede speedy investment/development project implementation.

An Investment and Project Facilitation Secretariat has been established under the Ministry of Industry and Investment Promotion to facilitate the functions of the Committee.

The first meeting of the Investment & Project Facilitation Committee (IPFC) was held on Wednesday at the office of the Minister of Industry and Investment Promotion.
