Donors to reconstruct all damaged schools, universities and training colleges

The Ministry of Education has finalised the list of schools damaged by the tsunami and the private sector led donor who will initiate repairs and reconstruction. The Memoranda of Understanding between the Ministry and the donors are being signed this week.

Twenty eight private sector and individual donors and five international NGOs will undertake school reconstruction according to the specifications and type of plans developed by the Ministry Engineering team, the Education Ministry said yesterday.

Construction will begin, starting January 26 (one month after the disaster) and will be closely monitored by the special School Reconstruction Unit set up at the Ministry of Education led by Additional Secretary P. Amerasinghe.

Meanwhile, the list of University campuses and Training Colleges and Technical Institutes damaged are also being finalised. In addition to Ministry funds, private sector contributions are being sought for such construction.
