The sex trap and feminine survival

Gender Dialogue by Nadira Gunatilleke

As a country with a rich traditional cultural heritage it is very regrettable to see how some Sri Lankan women and girls use their gender to acquire benefits, edging out other women and girls. Naturally some men fall into this trap. But this is not acceptable in our society where the Government is trying its level best to mainstream gender.

The problem of 'acquiring benefits through gender' is a very common problem. But in the past it was not a serious problem because the number of educated and qualified women was less than now and those women received their due place in the country without much competition. But today the situation has completely changed and this unethical tactic of using gender to gain benefits has become a plague.

In some other countries in the world legislation has been introduced to ensure rights of every citizen.

It is incredible to see how some women and some young girls use their gender from a tender age to make superiors (men) overlook deserving women and girls when offering benefits. The most pathetic situation is even some mothers encourage their daughters to use their gender to acquire certain things.

Those mothers encourage their daughters to abandon their education as soon as possible and start looking for employment (especially in the private sector) or a man to get married to.

On one hand some sections of the private sector cut down on their female cadre and majority of the female employees who are in this sector use this trick to get promotions and other benefits. Wearing revealing outfits and hanging around their superiors is the most common method used by those women.

The worst situation created by those women is taking control over other women after netting down the power holder (every time this is a man). It is sad to see how victimized women try to get friendly with the woman through various bribes without confronting her in order to see justice is done.

According to Mahesha, a 32 year old girl attached to a leading private bank, two girls were recruited to the bank with her and one of them is now in a higher grade. All she did was using her feminine tactics.

At the moment she is controlling all the other women in her department using the same method. (According to the girl she is acting like a prostitute and gets done what she wants as a reward). This is only one incident among thousands of similar incidents.

Human beings are the most advanced creature among the living on this earth and they do not use animals' tactics to get things done. Among the animals there are some species that use their body in different ways to attract the opposite sex but it is just for mating and not for material gain. But It is regrettable to see how women, the majority of our population, act against their own kind like animals.

If you are a woman or a girl who uses your gender to gain certain things you will not be able to sustain them for ever because Sri Lankan women are getting more and more educated, experienced and aware of life day by day.

Therefor it is better to try some other method like being qualified or gather experience! Rules and regulations should be introduced to almost every possible state and private institution when granting benefits.
