UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya has stressed that as a responsible Opposition, the UNP will fully cooperate with the Government to rebuild the nation and reconstruct the areas devastated by tsunami tidal wave. The UNP Deputy Leader who toured several tsunami stricken areas in the North-East to look into the grievances of families displaced by the disaster made these observations at a meeting at Mahmud Muslim Balika Vidyalaya, Kalmunai, former Parliamentary Affairs Minister A.H.M. Azwer told the Daily News yesterday. Jayasuriya has said: "This is a national crisis and party politics should be shunned in this situation. The UNP as a responsible opposition will extend its fullest cooperation to the Government towards this rebuilding exercise." The UNP Deputy Leader told the affected families that he came to look into their grievances not only as a politician representing the UNP but also as a member of the Disaster Management Committee set up by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga to obtain first hand information about the ongoing situation and submit a report to the President. The Deputy Leader was accompanied by Parliamentarians P.Dayaratne, Myown Muthaffa and former Parliamentary Affairs Minister A.H.M.Azwer. According to Azwer, the UNP Deputy Leader has visited all camps set up in Ampara and Batticaloa where the tsunami stricken families have been temporarily sheltered and also more than 100 miles affected areas in Valachchenai area. Jayasuriya has also toured the affected areas in Kalmunai, Nindavur, Pothuvil, Arugambay and Ulle village situated in Arugambay. The UNP Deputy Leader has gone to Karaitivu, Maruthamuni and Thirukkovil areas too. He has also visited the Paddirippu electorate and inspected the reconstruction of Ondachchimadam\Kottai Kallaru bridge destroyed by tidal waves. He said the Deputy Leader had a meeting in Batticaloa Kachcheri to review the existing situation in the area which was also attended by Parliamentarian T.Kanagasabai and Batticaloa District Secretary V. Shanmugam. He had also held discussions with LTTE members at Pathima Girls School, Kalmunai. Following the discussions held in Kalmunai, the affected families have emphasised the need for appointing another Tamil speaking additional AGA for Kalmunai electorate to speed up the relief work launched by the Government. The UNP Deputy Leader also met former Trade, Commerce and Shipping Minister A.R.Munsoor to discuss in detail the relief operations conducted by the Government in these tsunami affected areas. Jayasuriya also paid his tribute to a large number of voluntary organisations who rushed to these affected North-East areas to provide immediate relief measures to the people displaced by this sudden disaster. |
