Architects to re-house tsunami victims by Ramani Kangaraarachchi The Sri Lanka Institute of Architects (SLIA) has embarked on a program to re-house tsunami victims in view of the urgent national concern . This program will be carried out in conjunction with the Ministry of Urban Development and Water Supply and Urban Development Authority. Under this program the SLIA will provide the UDA with several design options of Generic Housing Forms for different locations and related professional services required for the construction of the units. Those interested in initiating housing projects to the displaced families could obtain professional services from them. The SLIA will raise funds and construct model settlements to re-house tsunami victims on lands offered by the Urban Development Authority. A Building Code will be prepared to be implemented by the UDA on new construction along the coastal belt. Chairman, Fund Raising Committee Archt Jayantha Perera said that a special fund titled "Architects" Fund to shelter Tsunami victims has been set up for donors to contribute towards the implementation of the program. an account has been opened at the Bank of Ceylon, Torrington Square Branch, Colombo 7 under account number 004530207698. Vidyajothi Archt Dr. Roland Silva will be the Patron of this Fund. Dialog GSM, through its charity arm 'Change' recently donated a new computer training centre with a new set of computers worth Rs. 250,000. The centre was opened at the Madukanda Temple premises recently by representatives from Dialog GSM, Damrivi Foundation and security forces of the area. Pradeep Keerthiratne of Dialog GSM said that his company would be engaging in more similar social development projects with the assistance of its one-million strong customer base. Dialog GSM's Change Charity arm has already launched several community projects in religious places, its General Manager Mothilal de Silva said. The Rs. 300 million-strong Change Trust Fund consists of 0.5 per cent volunteer contributions of the monthly bill of Dialog customers. |
