Japan provides $ 1m financial assistance for tsunami victims

The Government of Japan has extended a cash grant of US$ 1 million (approximately Rs. 100 million) to the Government of Sri Lanka to be utilised for urgently required relief measures of the tsunami affected areas.

Previously, just after the tsunami disaster the Government of Japan provided two grants, one in Yen 15,532,000 (approximately Rs. 15.2 million) and the other in US$ 100,000 (approximately 14.4 million) as emergency relief.

These grants were used to provide urgently required items such as tents, blankets, generators and water tanks.

Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi announced at the Tsunami Summit at Jakarta on January 6 a further grant of US $ 80 million under its Non Project Grant Aid for relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts. This grant aid is extended especially towards restoring disaster hit areas and bring normalcy to the country.

The Government of Japan is further assessing the situation in Sri Lanka, and would provide assistance towards reconstruction and rehabilitation required for restoring the socio-economic activities in the affected areas.
