Rs. 3b to rehabilitate local govt institutions

by Irangika Range

The Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local Government anticipates foreign funds up to Rs. 3 billion to rehabilitate the 90 local government institutions which were badly affected by the tsunami.

Minister Janaka Bandara Tennakoon said that the damage to shopping complexes, roads and water supply of the affected local government institutions in the Southern province has been estimated at Rs. 450 million. "The damage to local government institutions in the East was over Rs. 650 million. In order to assess the total damage, the European Union Local Government Society's Director Carl Wrights is due to arrive in Sri Lanka tomorrow," the Minister said.

"Wrights and officials will visit all affected areas in the sea belt with Minister Tennakoon and officials.

They will prepare the report after the assessment which will help to obtain financial support," he said.
