German cruise ship brings 626 tourists COLOMBO (AFP) - A cruise ship carrying 626 German holidaymakers arrived in Sri Lanka yesterday, the first passenger vessel to call here since the Asian tsunamis devastated much of the island's coastline. The Delphin Renaissance with a crew of 334 called at the Colombo port for an overnight visit. A port official said it was going ahead with the visit even though several other cruise liners have avoided the city. "The cruise ship had been to the Maldives and will leave Colombo today and head for Myanmar," port spokesman Daya Wijesekara said. The Maldives and Myanmar were also hit by the tsunamis. The passengers aboard the Delphin Renaissance were due to visit the city and tour an elephant orphanage at Pinnawala. Most of the resorts along the island's southern coast were battered by the December 26 tsunamis that killed nearly 31,000 people, including 100 tourists. However, most hotels affected by the giant wall of water that slammed into them have reopened for business. |
