Call for careful distribution of tsunami aid BERLIN, Wednesday (AFP) Countries providing aid to the devastated Indian Ocean region must take all steps to prevent corruption and ensure the donations are not being diverted, an international corruption watchdog said. The group, Transparency International, urged international donors meeting in Geneva to prioritise direct aid and set up a transparent budgeting system for rebuilding efforts. "It is crucial that the private sector, local authorities and international donors agree on a transparent system of tendering and reporting on expenditure," said TI chief executive David Nussbaum. "This is not only necessary to avoid corruption and diversion of funds, but also to ensure value-for-money and safety and quality standards in the construction process," he said in a statement released from the group's Berlin headquarters. Transparency said the emphasis over the coming months should be on providing maximum access to information about both sources and expenditure of funds. |
