We don't want forces handling relief The LTTE has registered their strong objection to opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe over the involvement of security personnel in assisting affected persons in the tsunami hit areas in the North. Wickremesinghe during his visit to Jaffna on January 5 visited the office of the LTTE's relief organization, the TRO at Nelliady and had a meeting at the TRO Office. The TRO and LTTE members who were present at the meeting, strongly objected to the involvement of security personnel in helping the affected Tamil persons and attending to relief measures. An Army spokesman who does not wish to be named, stated that in the first few days after the disaster, large numbers of Tamil civilians would have had to face starvation and other serious problems as only the Security Forces personnel were present to look after the tamil villagers for several days before the LTTE arrived in these areas. The villages are: Jaffna: Point Pedro, Kattakolam, Pottpathy, Kudattanni, Mamnalkadu, Nagar Kovil, Velvettiurai, Thondamanaru, Wanni: Kokilai, Pulmuddai. Trincomalee: Trinco Town, Muttur. Batticaloa: Valaichchenai, Kalkuddah, Batticaloa, Kalladi. The Security Forces came forward immediately to donate blood for injured Tamil persons, irrespective of who they were. They also cooked food for the affected persons and shared the food issued to them. The Security Forces personnel are disappointed at this response of the LTTE which is preventing them from assisting affected Tamil civilians. |
