Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel, Ron Prosor met the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prof. W. A. Wiswa Warnapala at the Foreign Ministry office recently when the Foreign Secretary paid a visit to Sri Lanka to find ways of helping the country, as the island state is undergoing a difficult period due to the devastation caused by the tsunami. While expressing his sympathy on behalf of the Government of Israel and its people for the tragedies undergone by the people of Sri Lanka, the Israeli Foreign Secretary informed the Deputy Minister Prof. Warnapala that his government has decided to help Sri Lanka in numerous ways. Already the following assistance has come. (a) Stocks of medical supplies and relief items; medical team of 11 including 2 doctors; (b) Voluntary organisations in Israel have donated massive relief items including medical supplies, food/child foods, bed sheets and mattresses and mineral water etc; (c) Israel well-wishers have contributed Israel Shequen 4,419 (SLRS 110,607), (d) The Israeli Humanitarian Mission has planned to send 15 relief workers to assist Sri Lankan volunteers; (e) The Government of Israel will donate modern hi-tech kitchen equipment which will enable the relief workers to prepare meals for thousands of victims instantly. The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed his gratitude on behalf of the Government of Sri Lanka for the numerous assistance provided by the Government of Israel and said that the people of Sri Lanka appreciates the friends who have come here in the hour of need. |
