On humanitarian grounds, the Government of the Republic of Korea has taken special measures on Sri Lankan workers who wish to return to their country to confirm the safety of their families and relatives and join the relief efforts in their country, a press release issued by the Korean Embassy stated. Illegal workers who depart voluntarily from Korea during the period of 5th January - 10th February 2005, will be allowed to leave without a penalty and re-enter Korea without disadvantage, although under the existing system they are prohibited from doing so for a period of more than one year. The Korean Government will also give high priority, in consultation with the Ministry of Labour Relations and Foreign Employment, to the voluntary leavers to be included in the year 2005 roster of job-seekers under the Employment Permit System. Legal workers who wish to depart Korea on the basis of re-entry, will be allowed to depart with re-entry permission at the airport or port on the day of the departure without usual handling charges. |
