by line by Manjula Fernando The National Engineering Research and Development Centre has offered 13 models of cost effective housing plans to re-build structures damaged in the tsunami tidal waves. Developed by Engineers at the NERD Centre the houses require less manpower and is estimated to cost 30 per cent less on material. "A vast number of structures in the coastal belt from north to south needs rapid rebuilding in the tsunami affected districts. Due to the sudden heightened demand there will be a shortage of material and skilled manpower," NERD Chairman Jayantha Ranatunga said. "The NERD cost effective housing construction method is a sound solution to this problem," he said adding that their houses use less sand, no wood, no roofing tiles and require a low percentage of manpower. "In the congested urban areas there will be need for high rising structures to house the displaced. Our technology can be adopted for constructing multi storeyed buildings as well as individual houses," he said. NERD cost effective houses vary from the 250 square feet to 800 sq feet and the cost is around Rs.400 per a single sq.ft excluding electrical works, plumbing and painting. "Our models will be available on our website www.nerdc.lk for any one to study and make use of," the Chairman said. "We have proposed the government to make use of our technology and the Centre is prepared to pass on the know-how free of charge, to any individual who will be involved in the reconstruction activities," Ranatunga said adding that there was already a long list of NERD licensees, both in the private and State sector trained on this low cost building construction. |
