Although the month of 'Thai' dawns in an unfortunate situation it is believed that the Dawn of 'Thai' always paves way for our prosperity. Sun who rises on the east will rise on Thai Pongal Day only with 'tears' seeing the plight of our brothers and sisters on the eastern coast. 'Thai' month dawns at a time when our brothers and sisters have been rendered refugees and destitute in their own places by the recent national disaster. We learn from the North-East that the growing younger generation - and in particular the students - have been badly affected by the disaster. For Saiva Tamils Thai Pongal is the traditional holy day to worship and thank the Divine in the form of the Sun, giving the World the necessary light and power. All Ceylon Hindu Congress (Federation of Hindu Religious Associations and Temple Trusts in Sri Lanka) wishes and expects our people to dedicate the Thai Pongal as a day of worship only and to avoid all celebrations and festivities particularly at this time of history when our people have been suffering. Let us observe the Thai Pongal in a religious way and praying to the Sun and offering our thanks by way of cooking 'Pongal' as 'prasadam' for Him and also pray that the unfortunate events of what we suffered should not recur. At the same time we invite all to join in our Congress' efforts to send exercise books, school uniforms and the other needs for our younger generation who have been badly affected in the North and East and who are appealing for assistance which is badly and urgently needed by them. All good hearted people are expected to join us in this service and extend their assistance and co-operation. The inmates of the students Hostel managed by ACHC at Colombo Hindu College Ratmalana and students of Thotalanga Sri Bala Vinayager Kovil Aranneri Padasalai will be joining the ACHC in its prayers and the Thai Pongal religious observances at the ACHC Headquarters. ACHC can be contacted on telephone No. 2434990 or 0712 723456 - Sarswathie Hall on Phone No. 2585975. |
