The number of refugee camps sheltering the Tsunami victims has come down from its original 793 to 482 accommodating 286,941 victims belonging to 46,955 families, as announced by a media communique issued by the Government Information Department yesterday (12). The decline was due to the victims' tendency to move to their own residences or to the houses of their kith and kin, stated the media announcement. The highest number of 260 refugee camps was reported from the North and East where 36 school buildings were utilized to accommodate Tsunami victims. The Government expects to clear soon the present 23 school buildings used as refugee camps islandwide in order to commence the 1st term of education by January 20. According to a Report by Dr. Tara de Mel, the Director of National Operations Centre, Tsunami claimed 30,882 human lives while injuring 15,166 victims. 6,088 persons are yet reported missing. As indicated in the reports of the National Operations Centre, the highest number of 20,529 deaths was reported from the North and East. |
