'Sunset and Sushi' promotes Lankan fish

Simultaneous events took place in Colombo and London yesterday to tell the world that fish exported from Sri Lanka is good to eat and the news that it is contaminated following the tsunami is nothing but a rumour.

While foreign diplomats in Sri Lanka gathered at Galle Face Hotel Colombo last evening for `Sunset and Sushi' event, dignitaries including members of the House of Commons and leading businessmen participated in `Fish and Ships' a promotion event in London.

Jerry Delil Khan, Executive Director of Batey Public Relations and Marketing told the Daily News that the purpose of the event was to dispel the rumours which have adversely affected Sri Lanka's fish exports and the tourism sector. Batey is a Singapore based company which has a contract with Sri Lanka Tourist Board to promote tourism.

"We called the event here `Sunset and Sushi' because Japan is one of the biggest buyers of Sri Lankan raw fish. The event in London was named `Fish and Ships' with the hope that Sri Lanka will be able to find assistance from the European countries to rebuild its fisheries sector which is badly affected by the tsunami.

There are several fishermen here whose boats and fishing gear was destroyed and are not without a livelihood." Khan said.
