Gem and jewellery exports record 24.6% increase Sri Lanka's total exports in the Gem and Jewellery sector recorded an increase of 24.6% percent during 2004 compared to the performance in 2003; according to Director General, T. Piyadasa of the National Gem and Jewellery Authority (NGJA). He said that Sri Lanka exported 28.62 Billion worth of Gems, Jewellery and Diamonds in 2003 while exports increased to Rs. 35.67 Billion during 2004. He said that increased awareness about the Sri Lankan Gems in major importing countries and the strong economics in USA and Europe were the main reasons for the increase in export earnings. He said that the "NGJA" organised the "Sri Lanka Pavilion" for the 13th consecutive year at the "Hong Kong Jewellery and Watch Fair" held in September 2004 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. As a result of our continued participation, Sri Lanka has established a reputation as the major supplier of high quality natural Blue Sapphires to the world. "NGJA" has finalised arrangements to organise a "Sri Lanka Pavilion" at the Bangkok Gem and Jewellery Fair to be held from February 22-27, 2005, with the participation of 12 members from the local trade, he said. |
