GlaxoSmithKline in huge humanitarian effort

In the aftermath of the unprecedented destruction caused by Tsunami, GlaxoSmithKline, a leading pharmaceutical company in the world has responded with unprecedented goodwill to the affected people in Sri Lanka.

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) - Sri Lanka came up with several relief initiatives from their Consumer and Pharmaceutical divisions. The consumer division donated more than Rs. one million worth of Panadol to the Ministry of Health and a further Rs. 1.5 million worth of nutritional products to various other agencies. The pharmaceuticals division contributed more than Rs. 5 million worth of medicine to the ministry and has contributed drugs with more than Rs. 250,000 to several doctors on request for relief work.

The company has also helped their affected employees in cash and in kind and are initiating internal programs to rebuild their lives. Dry rations and clothes have been despatched to various parts of the country.

Soon after the disaster a fund was set up by GSK where employees were encouraged to voluntarily donate three days salary and the company will match this contribution to build the fund and help their affected people. Both units, pharmaceuticals and consumer have set up task forces to handle the situation.

GSK International's overall response strategy will be guided by requests from major international relief agencies such as WHO and UNICEF who are working to access pharmaceutical, vaccine and other requirements.

This will be a key focus at GSK's corporate level. Already one million doses of antibiotics have been donated to affected countries and another one million is expected this week. 600,000 doses of Typhoid and Hepatitis-A vaccines are ready for donation. In another move GSK International has decided to contribute œ 2 million ($ 3.8 million) for rehabilitation work.
