Big demand for Lankan tea from CIS, ME countries Colombo Wednesday (Lankapuvath) There was a big demand for Sri Lankan tea from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), Turkey and Dubai at the first tea auction this year. A total of 6.4 million kilograms had been on offer at the recently concluded tea auction, a spokesman for Forbes and Walkers (Pvt) told (Lankapuvath). In the ex estate catalogues the total offerings declined to 0.8 M/kgs. There appeared to be less demand from all sectors, which consequently resulted in an overall decline in prices of Rs. 5 to 15 per Kg. At Tuesday's low grown sale a total of 3.3 M/Kgs came up for sale in the leafy tippy catalogues. There was a fair selection of well-made clean leaf teas on offer. However, in the Tippy catalogues most grades sold Rs. 5 to Rs. 10 lower to the previous sale yet the better made teas were able to maintain attractive levels. Another significant factor at this year's first tea auction was the rapid strengthening of the Sri Lankan rupee against the US Dollar. |
