Jaliya was a gem of a man Jaliya Jayasuriya was a gem of a man, an unsung hero who delivered whatever task he confronted without seeking recognition or reward. He preferred to work from the background. Paying attention to details and completing a mission on time were his great strengths. As Singer's Merchandising and Promotions Manager, Jaliya was in the forefront of Singer's long-standing sponsorship with the Sri Lankan cricket team. Throughout the six marvellous years of Singer's sponsorship of the Sri Lankan cricket team, he became a personal friend of the team members and sometimes their confidante. Jaliya also played the role of co-ordinator in Singer Asia's sports sponsorships in Sharjah, Singapore and Colombo. He played a dynamic role in projecting the Singer brand to two billion Asian viewers. His positioning of boards and banners was spot on to ensure that it caught the eye of the TV camera to give the brand maximum coverage. When I was called upon to serve as the Chairman of the Interim Cricket Board, Jaliya was the obvious choice as Secretary reluctantly coming forward to serve the game in a unique World Cup year. He cut across the factionalism in the board to unify the dissident group and also satisfy the needs of our team. It was typical of Jaliya that when he was offered a trip to watch the World Cup he turned it down on a matter of principle on the premise that all expenditure should be directed towards the game and not for officials. - Hemaka Amarasuriya |
