Renowned athlete and coach Van Twest dies Renowned athlete and athletic coach G.A. 'Jackie' Van Twest passed away on Sunday at the age of 76 following a brief illness. Van Twest was the 440 yards Public Schools champion when he won the event in 1946. He pursued his athletic career when he joined the staff of St. Peter's College, Bambalapitiya and became their athletics coach. Under his tutelage he was able to produce top class athletes in the calibre of Ranjit Weerasena (10 times national discus champion) and Ranjith Weerasekera, the 400 metres champion. He also coached several other athletes who went to represent the country at international meets. Van Twest was also assistant secretary of the Public Schools Athletic Association and a founder member of the Ceylonese Track and Field Club (CT & FC) in 1958 when he became their first treasurer. His son Jan Van Twest who is employed at Tangerine Beach Hotel also excelled in the 400 metres at St. Peter's College. The funeral took place at general cemetery, Kanatte yesterday. - (S.T.) |
