Sangaree lauds forces for support to distressed in North

by P. Krishnaswamy

In the aftermath of the tsunami devastation, all communities of the country, regardless of their ethnic, religious and political backgrounds rose to the occasion and joined in the relief efforts, said V. Anandasangaree, President of the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF).

But it was very unfortunate that certain forces bent upon creating chaos, even at the expense of the distressed people, caused problems in refugee centres in the North while relief assistance was being distributed, he said.

The country is now confronted with the monumental task of providing relief and rehabilitation assistance to huge number of affected families who have lost everything they possessed including their loved ones. We must join hands to provide solace to the affected people and to rebuild the country, he said.

There is no denying the fact that government security forces at the risk of their life rescued families in distress in Vadamarachchi and shared with them their food and other day to day needs. Such a gesture of goodwill and the timely assistance should be appreciated, Anandasangaree said.

Meanwhile, in a letter addressed to President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, The TULF leader has stated that, "the President should counter the allegations of Sea Tiger Chief Mr. Soosai's allegations that the Tamils of the North and the refugees there are not receiving proper relief from the Government." He (Soosai) had also accused that politicians of the South had not visited the affected areas and expressed their sympathies to the victims, Sangaree has stated.

Anandasangaree, in his letter, has requested the President to publish a list giving details of relief items and other assistance sent to the victims of the coastal belt of Vadamarachchi East and Mullaitivu. He has also requested the President to increase the quantity of relief assistance to these areas and to provide heavy earth moving equipments which are desperately needed in the areas.

The 22 Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MPs who claim to represent the Tamil people boycotted the 'All Party Conference' convened by the President and the Honourable Prime Minister and, therefore, it is unfair on their part to accuse lapses by the Government, he has stated. "The whole world knows as to what happened to the Mahinda Rajapakse's team of parliamentarians including Propaganda Secretary of the JVP Wimal Weerawansa which visited the refugee camps in Jaffna," he has stated.

Neither the LTTE nor the refugees could be blamed for this uncivilised act. A group of people who went there to see what was happening during the visit had organised the demonstration.

This is quite foreign to Tamil culture and in the absence of an apology not coming from those involved in the act and also the TNA parliamentarians, he was apologising on behalf of the Tamil people to PM Mahinda Rajapakse and MP Wimal Weerawansa, Sangaree has stated.
