Twelve government hospitals destroyed in tsunami

by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi

Health authorities yesterday confirmed that twelve Government hospitals had been destroyed in last week's tsunami disaster.

These include the Mahamodara Hospital in Galle, hospitals in Nindavur, Karthivu, Saindamarudu, Maradamune, Pothuvil and Oluvil in the Ampara district and also the Kinniya and Kuchchaweli hospitals in the Trincomalee district.

In addition the Kaththankudi, Palamin Madhu hospitals in the Batticaloa district and Maradankarni hospital in the Jaffna district have been affected by the tidal waves. "Some of these hospitals have been completely ruined.' a Ministry spokesman said. He said the Ministry had already taken initial steps to rehabilitate the devastated hospitals and also to construct new buildings.

"Several foreign countries have pledged assistance to the Government to rebuild these hospitals."the spokesman added.

In order to cater to the existing requirements, the Health Ministry has taken steps to acquire Government and Private buildings in the tidal wave ravaged areas to be used as health camps as the authorities mounted the biggest ever disease control operation to combat the outbreak of epidemics in the diaster hit zones.

Besides, the Ministry has launched a special round the clock program to distribute drugs required for the victims in all the affected areas.

"All the necessary drugs have been sent to the affected areas and there is no any shortage of drugs there," the spokesman added.

Ministry's Epidemiology Unit has launched a program to educate the public on the preventive measures.

Also, additional health staff will be deployed at the Medical Supply Division from today onwards to expedite the drugs distribution program, a Ministry spokesman told the Daily News.

Healthcare and Nutrition Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva on Sunday visited the Mahamodara Hospital to obtain first hand information about the devastation caused to the hospitals.
