About 40 teams of volunteers organized under the Lake House-SLBC joint voluntary operation unit, capable of providing diverse services of varying levels are by now operative in various parts of the island affected by the tsunami tidal waves. The team consisting of medical officers and Ambulance Brigade which left for Batticoloa and Valachchenai from Colombo on December 31 have conducted Medical camps at Valachchenai, Kiran, Morakotanchena, Sandiveli and Wattawan, where thousands of victims have received treatment. A team consisting 40 Kurunegala Boy Scouts who left for Trincomalee on January 01, having concluded their mission to clean the Trincomalee Town returned to Kurunegala yesterday (03). The 35 member team of the Polgahakamatha Development Society of Dalugama who left Kribathgoda on January 02 proceeded to Paiyagala and having completely cleaned the severely damaged St. Xavier's Church, Paiyagala, has returned. About 10 teams left Colombo during the last few days to clean the areas between Hikkaduwa and Ambalangoda. They are to clean the roads in various places and refugee camps. The Lake House-SLBC Voluntary Operations Unit has already despatch services teams to Trincomalee, Hambantota, Matara, Galle, Habaraduwa. Pereliya, Telwatta, Dodanduwa, Batticaloa and Valachchenai and the Unit expects to send further teams to Pothuvil, Kalmunai and Akkaraipattu within the next few days. A large number of Volunteers are coming forward to join the operations. According to organizers, inadequacy of transport and non availability of data relating to services needed, are the main obstacles they have to surmount.
