PM tours southern belt, inspects ground situation

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse visited the tidal wave affected areas in the Hambantota, Kalutara, Colombo and Galle areas on Saturday and Sunday to inspect the ground situation and to ensure that relief measures are properly carried out.

During his visit the Premier met with officials and NGOs coordinating the relief measures while observing the destruction caused by the tsunami waves.

The Premier held initial discussions with the relevant authorities and agencies to obtain information required to rehabilitate the government buildings, bridges and roads ruined by the tidal waves, a spokesman for the Prime Minister office said.

Addressing a meeting at the Galle Divisional Secretariat, Rajapakse stressed that the devastated Southern Province will be re-built according to proper plan with special emphasis on town development.

The meeting also focused on expediting the reconstruction and rehabilitation work in the affected areas and also resolving issues concerning health, water distribution, electricity and fuel distribution.

The Premier also inspected the damaged bridges along the Galle road. He also instructed officials to take swift measures to resettle the affected families. Ministers Amarasiri Dodangoda, Nimal Siripala de Silva, Piyasena Gamage and Chief Ministers Mahipala Herath and Shan Wijelal joined the Premier.

The Prime Minister said reviving the fishery industry will commence from the Dodanduwa fishery harbour and that reconstruction work on other fishery harbours will be implemented at district level.

He instructed the Divisional Secretaries to use the funds allocated by the Government to improve the infrastructure facilities including health services in the affected areas. He also gave instructions to expedite the reconstruction and rebuilding work of six Police stations and the Southern Navy camp which have been damaged.
