Govt. taking all steps to help tsunami victims - Maha Nayake Thera

Most. Ven. Thibbotuwawe Sri Sidhartha Sumangala Mahanayake Thera of the Malwatte Maha Vihara Chapter said in Trincomalee on Sunday, that the Government was taking all possible steps to help those people suffering owing to the recent tsunami disaster. In that the government is treating the people of the South, the North and East alike without discrimination.

Most. Ven. Mahanayake Thera made these observations when he arrived in Trincomalee accompanied by 25 lorries carrying disaster relief collected from the Kandy area to be distributed to the people in the Northern and Eastern Provinces.

More than 100 members of Maha Sangha including the Most. Ven. Niyangoda Vijithasiri Anunayake Thera and Ven. Walgowwagoda Wimalabuddhi Nayake Thera, Secretary to the Malwatte Chapter, Central Provincial Governor Monti Goppalwa Rev. Fr. Geoffrey Abeysekara, Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake, Diaywadana Nilame Neranjan Wijeyaratne, Provincial Minister Ediriweera Weerawardene, DIG Central Province Nimal Mediwake, Member of Parliament Y.M. Navaratne Banda were also accompanied the Mahanayake Thera.

Most. Ven. Mahanayake Thera of the Malwatte Chapter added that the people of this country who belong to different communities lived in harmony in this country.

They did not discriminate against the minorities. The Government treated them all alike at this difficult hour, so that the people in the North and East should not have any fears or suspicions.

Addressing refugees stationed at Jayasumanaramaya in Trincomalee, Sri Vipulananda Tamil Vidyalaya, Thakwapura and Jamaliya Vidyalaya Most. Ven. Thibbotuwawe Sri Sumangala Maha Nayake Thera added the country was faced with the most furiest disaster in the 2500 year history of the country. Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim and other people in the South, North and East along the coastal areas have been badly affected.

They had lost some of their kith and kin and all their belongings. The Maha Sangha arrived here not only to express our condolences and sympathies, but, also to help those affected people irrespective of the caste, creed or ethnicity.

We have brought essential relief collected from the people of Kandy to be distributed here. From the time the tsunami disaster occurred the government had taken every possible step to provide relief to the affected people.

The President who was abroad returned immediately and started handling the situation herself. Today the Government and the Opposition had come together to overcome the difficult situation and restore normalcy in the country. It was a highly commendable step which should be continued, said the Most Ven. Mahanayake Thera.

Many countries in the world who were faced with similar situations and disasters were rebuilt through national unity and dedication. Therefore it was necessary for the government and the opposition to take into consideration that and dedicate and devote themselves to create a better nation. They all should make a united effort.

Ven. Hapugollewe Ananda Kiththi Thera, Head of the Jayasumanaramaya in Tincomalie, Trustee of the Jamalia Mosque Thakwapura Alhaj Rahul Hameed thanked the Mahanayake Thera for his kind gesture.
