Ceylinco Sussex College, a unique concept

The Ceylinco Sussex College (CSC) concept is unique as though the entire curriculum is in the English medium yet everything is Sri Lankan. The entire process is geared to ideally suit the type of education that every child of Sri Lanka should receive.

The entire system is designed to suit Sri Lankans because the main objective is to create a real Sri Lankan atmosphere with English medium education.

K. A. S. Jayatissa, Deputy Chairman, CT & FC Group, a part of Ceylinco Consolidated who is in charge of the entire Ceylinco Sussex Educational Program said that his main idea is to see that every child who studies in these schools is nurtured to be suitable for the job market and secondly they will be provided ample exposure to international affairs. Jayatissa has been a very well experienced teacher and a scholar having the distinction of being a lecturer in technical institutions and the Sri Jayawardenepura University.

Ceylinco Group Chairman, Dr. Lalith Kotelawala said the objective of Ceylinco Sussex College (CSC) is to impart a quality English medium education to Sri Lankan students while maintaining our own culture, thereby assuring the future of the nation.

The concept mooted by Dr. Kotelawala, CSC was inaugurated in January 2004 in Nugegoda and Negombo as the newest educational institutions in those localities. The Nugegoda CSC was started on January 22 with only 102 students and today the number has swelled to 220 and at the beginning of next year it is expected to double this number. The Negombo CSC commenced on January 28, 2004 with 18 students and the progress is similar to that of Nugegoda.

Jayatissa said that they have already finalised plans to commence another five schools in Kandy, Kurunegala, Gampaha, Kiribathgoda and Galle.

The principal at Ceylinco Sussex Nugegoda is Mrs. R. V. Fernando while the principal at Negombo is J. A. Arangalla. Arangalla is the former Director of National Schools, Teacher Training Colleges and National Colleges of Education.

Mrs. Fernando, CSC Nugegoda said that Science and Mathematics in English is started at Grade Six and Activity Based Real English (ABOE) have been introduced at Grade One and most of the activities are conducted in the English medium from the early formative years of the child.

Religion and language that constitutes a major important part of the education at CSC are taught in their mother tongue up to Grade IV. While Islam is taught, parallel to teaching them in the child's mother tongue they are also taught Arabic where necessary. From Grade V everything is switched into English.
