BoC donates Rs 25 m for relief

The Bank of Ceylon (BoC) as the nation's premier bank has always been conscious of its special responsibility of not only being a catalyst for economic growth but also being a channel to offer assistance to the community in times of distress, a spokesman for the Bank said.

He said it was therefore in keeping with its commitment that the Bank of Ceylon responded immediately to the call of the Government with a contribution of Rs. 25 million for relief work to cope with the unprecedented national calamity caused by the 'tsunami'.

Simultaneously the bank's own welfare department together with the bank's trade unions and religious associations joined hands and commenced collecting dry rations, clothes and medicines. The response from bank employees was spontaneous and vehicles soon began their missions of mercy co-ordinating with the bank's branch network to bring relief to the most needy.

Earlier this year when a severe drought affected the North-Western province President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga initiated a fund for the immediate construction of wells for drinking water.

The Bank of Ceylon was one of the first to respond with a contribution of Rs. 2.5 million. Similarly last year when floods created severe damage, the Bank of Ceylon immediately contributed Rs. 5 million and also undertook to rehabilitate nine schools whose buildings were damaged.

A senior manager of the Bank of Ceylon said that the bank's concern for social welfare is part of its overall commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility.

Apart from making significant contributions for relief work in times of national calamities, the bank has regularly been sponsoring many other well deserved causes and furthermore the bank's staff is also part of its social responsibility projects.
