Rs. 7.7 million coir product village at Kesbewa by Irangika Range The Small and Rural Development Ministry has set up a coir product manufacturing village at Kahapola, Kesbewa as a part of the `Guru Pehayen Ran Pehayata', a national program to develop one thousand villages. The total investment for the project is Rs.7.7 million. The Ministry will also develop 13 Industrial Villages in the Colombo district with an investment of Rs.29 million. Deputy Minister Sunil Handunnetti said that the ministry has already set up 125 Industrial Villages to promote various industries islandwide. "As a result of the introduction of the open economy to Sri Lanka local manufacturing industries were neglected. Local manufacturers were unable to compete with foreign products. We could change this situation by developing local industries. Our main target is to create a new consumer culture which recognises and gives due respect to locally made products," the Deputy Minister said. He said that the Ministry has also decided to provide assistance directly to promote each Industrial Village for three years while the Industrial Development Board will provide the technology and consultation support. |
