The main aim of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and the UPFA government is to resettle the masses who were displaced due to unexpected sudden tidal waves. Plantation Industries Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa has decided to financial and other aid necessary for the purpose, states a press release issued by the Ministry. A relief committee has been set up headed by the Minister comprising all heads of institutions that come under the ministry. As the first step taken on the instructions of this committee infant milk food, milk food, dry rations, clothes, essential medicines worth over Rs. 10 million have already been distributed among the tidal wave victims and it would be continued uninterrupted. Provincial plantation companies and affiliated institutions have contributed towards the second step to rebuild the damaged houses and restore the infrastructure facilities devastated by the tragedy. Rs. 5.3 million has already been collected for the purpose. Three metric tonnes of essential medicines received through personal efforts of Minister Anura Priyadharsana Yapa has been handed over to the Health Ministry. The Ministry has decided to give alms to the Maha Sangha in order to confer merit on the dead brethren the release adds. |
