Korea sends relief assistance

The Korean Government has decided to immediately despatch a cargo plane of the Republic of Korea Airforce to transport medical supplies. The plane is expected to arrive in Colombo on the morning of the first day of the New Year.

The Korean business community in Sri Lanka continues to join relief efforts. Keangnam Enterprises Ltd, an international construction company from Korea handed over a donation of Rs. 5 million to the Prime Minister as a contribution to the Relief Fund set up for the people affected by the tidal wave disaster.

Keangnam has also deployed its heavy machinery such as excavators, wheel loaders, dump trucks, emergency generator sets to the most affected Hambantota area to clear the debris in the town and surrounding areas. The company will also provide a water bowser to provide drinking water to the people of the Ambalangoda area. Depending on the need for assistance the company is prepared to increase the amount of machinery and other assistance that is currently being provided.

Kusang Lanka (Pvt) Ltd, a ski glove maker at Kandana, has decided to donate an additional amount of US$5,000 further to the amount of US$ 5,000 pledged on December 29.

Y-International (Pvt) Ltd, a garment manufacturer located at Kiriella is contributing Rs. 600,000 for relief work.

Camp Master Colombo (Pte) Ltd (Managing Director H. K. Lee), a tent maker located at Malabe will set up 200 sets of self-manufactured tents by its Korean staff in some of the affected areas and hand them over to the displaced people there. The company will also distribute foodstuffs to the people.

A 16-member relief team organised by the 'Worldwide Neighbours' has commenced its activities in Sri Lanka. They brought with them cash of US $ 200,000 and clothing equivalent to US $ 400,000 and will exercise medical treatment and distribute relief supplies.

A two-member relief team arranged by 'World Vision' arrived on December 30 to donate contributions worth US $ 115,000 in cash and relief supplies. A nine-member medical team organised by 'Good Neighbours International' also arrived today to exercise medical services and distribute clothing to the people affected by the disaster.

A 15-member medical team organised by 'Green Doctors' is expected to arrive on January 1, 2005 to extend medical services.
