ASPI down, MPI up

The price indices moved towards opposite directions yesterday with the All Share Price Index (ASPI) moving down by 5.21 points and the Milanka Price Index (MPI) moving up by 1.67 points. The ASPI which started at 1510.75 points closed at 1505.54 points moving down by 0.3 per cent while the MPI which opened at 2069.02 points moved up by 0.1 per cent to close at 2070.69 points.

The Beverages Food and Tobacco (1.07 per cent), Stores and Supplies (1.06 per cent) and Diversified Holdings (02 per cent) sectors recorded noteworthy gains while Motors (4.25 per cent), Oil Palms (3.2 per cent), Construction and Engineering (2.3 per cent) and Power and Energy (2.2 per cent) were the main losers.

A total turnover of Rs. 111.3 million was recorded. The Power and Energy Sector accounted for nearly 30 per cent of the total turnover of the day. A total of 5.7 million shares were traded during the day. 2.1 million Nawaloka Hospital shares were traded at Rs. 3.25 per share, accounting for nearly 37 per cent of the total share volume of the day.

Foreign investors continued to be net buyers in the market with purchases of Rs. 7.1 million and sales of Rs. 1.2 million. Foreign purchases accounted for only 6.3 per cent of the total turnover.

The top gainers included Lanka Ceramics, Kapila Heavy, Bahira Farms Ltd., Hunters and Malwatte Velly Plantations while AMW, Ceylon Foreign Trades, Agalawatte Plantations and Bukit Dhara were among the top losers.A total of 1,519 trades were concluded during the day while the Market Capitalisation of the CSE stood at Rs. 383 billion.
