Minister of Women's Empowerment and Social Welfare Sumedha G. Jayasena visited the Bandaranaike International Airport to see the relief assistance from abroad properly received and distributed. A. L. M. Hisbulla, Chairman, Airport, Sita Rajapakse, Secretary of the Ministry Sunil Samaraweera, Senior Assistant Secretary and Gihan Kapilasiri, Co-ordinating Secretary also participated. The Ministry requested all the District Secretaries and Divisional Secretaries to contact the Operation Room of this Ministry for their requirements immediately. A large number of countries and foreign organisations responding to the Government's international appeal for immediate and medium term help have assisted the Tsunami disaster victims of Sri Lanka. A total of 341296 Kgs, of relief assistance by way of emergency medical kits, (drugs and supplies), school kits, tents, syringes, purified water, food items have already been airlifted by 50 aircrafts by Singapore, India, Malaysia, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Japan, France, Russia, Israel, U.K., Greece, Nepal, China, UAE, Turkey, Switzerland, USA, Italy, Canada, Bhutan and Belgium. A 24 hour clearing unit and an office have been set up at the Bandaranaike International Airport by the Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Social Welfare to ease the clearing and distribution of assistance. The assistance will be distributed according to the needs of the area. |
