Rs. 135.5 m for tsunami victims of 16 districts

by Nadira Gunatilleke

The Women's Empowerment and Social Welfare Ministry has granted Rs.135.5 million to provide relief for tsunami victims of 16 districts.

Rs. 10 million each has been given to Kalutara, Galle, Matara, Hambantota, Puttalam, Polonnaruwa, Moneragala, Ampara, Mullaitivu, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Jaffna, Vavuniya and Killinochchi districts, Co-ordinating Secretary to the Women's Empowerment and Social Welfare Minister W.M.S. Wijekoone said.

Wijekoone said Rs. 2 million has been given for Gampaha district while another Rs. 1.5 million has been granted for Colombo district. Some District Secretaries have not send reports and some had not even visited affected areas. Because of this, the Government's relief program faces difficulties when implementing without knowing which requirements to send which camps, he added.

The space at the Bandaranaike International Airport is not sufficient to unload all relief loads sent by foreign countries, Wijekoone said.

According to latest statistics collected by the National Disaster Management Centre, there are 791 camps in the country which provide shelter for tsunami victims. A total of 20,206 families (267,785 persons) stay at these camps. A total of 79,100 houses have been fully damaged while the number of partially damaged houses is 20,685.

The Disaster Management Centre (NDMC) requests the public to help provide proper sanitation, ensure safety of displaced families, clean and repair roads and prevent environmental problems. NDMC contact numbers are 0112-877611, 0112-877612 and 0112-877613 and the fax number is 0112-877677.
