Rs. 30m worth emergency relief goods from Japan

by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi

Japan yesterday handed over emergency relief goods worth Rs 30 million to Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse at Temple Trees.

The emergency goods include generators, tents, sleeping mattresses plastic sheets, water purification units, water tanks and electric cords.

Japanese Ambassador Akio Suda said apart from these emergency relief goods, the Japanese Government has provided a grant of US$ one million.

Speaking to the media soon after the donation, the Prime Minister commended the assistance extended by Japan. "Japan has always been helping Sri Lanka. Over 28,000 people died due to this disaster and at the same time, we have to look after affected families" he said.

He said there is an urgent need for food, medicine and medical equipment.

The Prime Minister stressed that the country needs help to recover from this crisis. "This tidal wave has affected everything from tourism to industries etc. We need help to rebuild the country."

Ambassador Suda said Japan was committed to extend assistance to Sri Lanka. "We are considering extending further assistance depending on the requirements."

He said Japan would also extend to mid-term rehabilitation projects after deciding on what kind of projects that need to be implemented. "We also understand the need for reviving the infrastructure facilities and we will consider that."
