by Uditha Kumarasinghe The Samurdhi Development Officers (SDOs) and Samurdhi Managers will make an appeal from the Government to declare January 14 as the National Disaster Day to launch a countrywide fund raising campaign to assist the thousands of people displaced by the tidal wave disaster on last Sunday. Nearly 24,000 SDOs and 2050 Samurdhi Managers are scheduled to commence fund raising campaign throughout the country at the same time on January 14. The money collected from this campaign will be given to the special disaster management trust fund set up by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga to assist the victims of Tsunami disaster, Chairman of the All Ceylon Samurdhi Managers Association Somasiri Liyanage told the Daily News. He said the entire workforce of over 26,000 SDOs and Samurdhi Managers will engage in this exercise. Therefore, every citizen can join hands and make their contribution to this program. The funds collected from this campaign will be mainly utilised to build houses damaged by tidal waves. The General Secretary of Samurdhi Development and Agriculture Research Officers Association S.A.D. Jagath Kumara said of the Rs.2500 pay hike of their December salary by the Government's maiden budget, all SDOs have agreed to contribute Rs.1500 while the Samurdhi Managers have agreed to provide the whole amount to the Disaster Management Trust Fund. This will add Rs.8,725,000 to this fund. Meanwhile, the entire Samurdhi workforce has also joined hands as one team to commence Shramadana campaigns to clear the cities destroyed by the tidal wave disaster by assisting attempts made by the Government to restore the lives of the people in these affected areas. As the initial step, over 2000 Samurdhi officers started to clear the Matara city on Thursday, he said. He said the Samurdhi workforce is ready to make any assistance or sacrifice to the Government in this event of national disaster.
