The Centre for National Operations (CNO) has been set up under President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga to co-ordinate all operations related to tsunami disaster at the Presidential Secretariat. It has been operational since December 30, 2004. CNO will be the key focal point for the co-ordination of relief work supported by the international donor community - multi laterals, bilateral and voluntary assistance. This includes co-ordination of line ministries, all provincial and governmental bodies. CNO houses desks of social services, health, sanitation and food, utilities, infrastructure, government institutions, foreign affairs, forces, police, air port operations, UN and international organisations, NGOs communication and media, internally displaced persons. CNO is effectively co-ordinating all activities closely with the Commissioner General of Essential Services and the Special Task Forces on Post Disaster Reconstruction. The CNO is supported by a team from the United Nations. Since inception significant progress has been made to streamline logistical activities, health, social welfare and relief activities, donor assistance, NGO activities, improve co-ordination with all forces, police, line ministries and government agencies. The CNO on a 24 hour basis monitors seismic activity through links with United Sates geological survey. The Centre is collecting, verifying, analaysing statistics related to the disaster.
