Chilaw Marians first to enter final

Chilaw Marians SC put up a superb all round performance to beat the more fancied NCC team by 42 runs in their Premier Division one limited overs cricket tournament's first semifinal match played under lights at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Monday.

Chilaw Marians SC defended their modest total of 184 runs quite successfully and dismissed the star studded NCC batting line up for only 142 runs in the 47th over.

Earlier Chilaw Marians SC recovered from an early setback to reach a respectable 184 runs from 47 overs. Chilaw Marians SC winning the toss and batting first lost opener Ishan Muthalib in the very first ball of the innings and then collapsed to 42 for 5 at one stage.

However Malintha Gajanayake and Sahan Wijeratne rescued them with a superb sixth wicket stand of 91 runs. Gajanayake went on to hit a top score of 46 while Wijeratne played a good supporting role making a solid 30 under tremendous pressure.

But after their departure Chilaw Marians SC lost wickets at regular intervals and were eventually dismissed for 184 runs in the 47th over. Ravindra Pushpakumara and Lasith Malinga captured three wickets each for NCC.

NCC: 142 in 46.3 overs (Hashan Tillekeratne 15, Prasanna Jayawardena 11, Russel Arnold 10, Upul Tharanga 56, Janaka Gunaratne 2 for 17, Hasantha Fernando 2 for 32, Ranil Dhammika 2 for 11) (C.D.)
