The Open University, the only Distance Education Tertiary Institution in Sri Lanka completes 25 years of existence on July 22. When the university was established in 1980 it pioneered the vision of providing tertiary education through distance mode to working adults of Sri Lanka. Today it is the largest university in Sri Lanka with an enrolment of over 23,000 students, states an Open University news release. In a context where access to higher education is limited due to lack of places in the conventional system, the Open University has made singularly a significant contribution in providing a second chance to enter higher education to those who have missed the opportunities in the regular education system to working adults to acquire continuous professional development for career enhancement and for new placements and also to qualified youth who have failed to enter the conventional national universities. The Open University has planned to celebrate its Silver Jubilee with several publicity activities. A major activity in the schedule is to publish feature articles every month on the Open University in daily newspapers in all the three media commencing from January 2005 until the final celebrations in July 2005, it adds. |
