Norwegian delegation satisfied with maritime education here

A Norwegian delegation who visited Sri Lanka to study and observe the Maritime Education of Sri Lanka, commented that the training equipment and expertise available in Sri Lanka are on par with developed countries and hence, Sri Lankan trained seafarers should be capable of serving successfully on any type of ships.

This special delegation from Norway visited Sri Lanka to study and observe our maritime training and certification system to sign an agreement concerning the recognition of certificates issued to seafarers by the Sri Lankan Maritime Administration.

It is expected that this move will facilitate Sri Lankan seafarers to gain employment on Norwegian Flag ships. Estimates indicate that nearly 45,000 foreign nationals are employed on Norwegian ships at present and that they are mainly nationals of Philippines, India, Bangladesh etc.

This delegation visited the Colombo International Nautical and Engineering College, Malabe and Mercantile Seamen Training Institute, Galle and was satisfied with the training system and facilities available at these institutions.

They also visited the Directorate of Merchant Shipping and satisfied themselves that the training, examination and certification system and that personnel engaged in carrying out these functions are of a quality and standard well on par with the best available internationally.

This visit was coordinated by the Directorate of Merchant Shipping of the Ministry of Ports and Aviation.
