by Nadira Gunatilleke Cultural Affairs and National Heritage Minister Vijitha Herath directed the Ministry officials to take necessary steps to rebuild the damaged wall of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi as soon as possible and prevent the rest of the wall from collapsing, a ministry spokesman said. He said that the lower part of the wall of the historic Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi collapsed on Sunday as a result of torrential rains experienced in the Anuradhapura district during the past few days. The wall had been constructed 50 to 75 years ago and it was built without proper care and strength. A decision was taken to put a protective wood layer to prevent the soil thickness pushing forward during a meeting held under the patronage of Atamasthanadthipathi Ven. Pallegama Siriniwasa Thera, Ministry Secretary A. P. A. Gunasekera and several other officials, he added. Archaeologists and engineers have confirmed that no damage or threat had been caused to the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi or its boundary due to the wall collapsing. |
