Tyronne Fernando has been an eminent scholar who has obtained his higher education on foreign soil and has been an unassuming and visionary politician. His day of appointment to this high office is a red letter day for the people of the North and East, states Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Development in the Eastern Province on the assumption of duties by Tyronne Fernando as North-East Governor. He said: "His service to the people of Sri Lanka irrespective of caste, creed and religion having assumed important ministerial responsibilities is something that cannot be easily forgotten. I have associated with him in Parliament for many years and here too he has earned for himself the respect and admiration of his co-Parliamentarians. It is saddening to note that a politician of his calibre is no more in our midst, but it gladdens us to find that he is amply rewarded with a much more exalted position by the President for which act of wisdom my heartfelt thanks are to the latter. It goes without saying that Fernando will be able to serve the people better than in a ministerial position. "Our government is making all endeavours in collaboration with foreign institutions to lift the people of the North and East from their war-torn shackles and I as the Minister of Infrastructure Development in the Eastern Province am striving for peace, harmony and development of the Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim people of the East. The Governorship that Fernando is holding today is a very important position. The atmosphere of the past 25 years where these two provinces have been only breathing the air of war has now changed. It has become necessary that the North and East provinces which have been very badly affected by the cruel war sees a period of gaining their fundamental rights and we have no hesitation to state that the Governor who has assumed this highest position will definitely render his yeomen service to the people of the North and East in a very fitting manner." |
