Over 501,000 candidates are sitting for the 2004 GCE Ordinary Level examination which began Monday. The examination will end on December 23, Examinations Commissioner General Mahinda Wijayasiri said.

A total of 374,411 school and 126,819 private candidates have applied to sit this year's examination.

The examination will be held at 3,827 centres islandwide including Government-controlled areas of the North - East. Special centres have been set up to facilitate students from schools in the uncleared areas. A total of 30,304 examiners have been appointed to oversee the exam.

The Department has made arrangements to carry out paper marking in two stages, the first stage from January 1 to 10 and the second stage from January 29 to February 6.

During the second phase of paper marking, the schools will remain open to minimise disruption to school activities.

Twenty six schools have been selected for paper marking for the second phase and 91 for the first phase. Government schools closed for December holidays on December 10 and will open for the new term on January 3. The schools selected for the 1st phase of the paper marking will open on January 11.

Last year, more than 500,000 candidates sat for the GCE O/L examination held from December 1 to 12. The results were announced by the Department in March 2004.

As Commissioner General Wijayasiri is indisposed, the examination arrangements will be overseen by former commissioner general A.M.R.B. Amarakoon, who is an advisor to the national evaluation and testing service. The OL examination timetable can be viewed on the Department website - www.doenets.lk.
