The Department of Information has published a book titled The Path to Freedom containing 10 speeches made by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga on National Independence Days from 1995 to 2004. The Path to Freedom is presented by the Ministry of Information and Media on the occasion of the completion of 10 years in the office of the President. This publication has been compiled and edited by the Department of Information on the advice and guidance of W.B. Ganegala, Secretary, Ministry of Information and Media. The first copy of The Path to Freedom was presented to President Kumaratunga by Minister Mangala Samaraweera on Sunday in Matara. The Sinhala and Tamil versions have also been released simultaneously. The book will serve as an essential source material. The Path to Freedom is an embodiment of the firm commitment the President has consistently maintained, that is, the need for bringing the ethnic conflict to an end peacefully through a negotiated settlement. President Kumaratunga was first elected to the office of the President in November 1994 and was re-elected in December 1999. During the intervening period, she delivered nine addresses to the Nation on each Independence Day. The address delivered in 2000 was written by her but read by the Speaker. At the time of the Independence Day in 2002, President Kumaratunga was recovering from an LTTE attempt to assassinate her on the eve of the 1999 Presidential Election. The dominant theme that runs through this 74-page publication is the President's mission of nation-building and the imperative need for consensual politics and governance. Ganegala has made arrangements to distribute copies of The Path to Freedom to the diplomatic missions here and abroad, ministries, government departments and statutory institutions and the libraries. |
