Throwback to memories of 1983 religious communal pogrom: Shahrukh Khan concert sabotage closely organised conspiracy by Geoff Wijesinghe Police yesterday appealed to all those who witnessed the grenade attack at the Bollywood concert on Saturday which killed two and injured 12 to come forward and inform the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) of what they have seen at the scene of the crime. Director CCD Senior SP Sarath Lugoda told the Daily News yesterday that all information provided will be highly confidential. He said in particular the persons in the audience who were next to the grenade blast will be able to identify the assailant. The Director appealed in the name of bringing the criminals before justice to come forward and give Police vital evidence and to help investigations. "The public can keep their complete trust with Police of the secrecy of the information," the Director said. Meanwhile, Police investigators believe that the assassin would have been accompanied by a few others and vanished into the darkness of the night in the confusion. Police are tracking down the organisers of the mayhem which culminated in the grenade attack. The IGP has deployed five teams to track down the killer, the mastermind behind the blast and the suspect who instigated the mob. It points to a conspiracy, they said. "Efforts are being made to trace the origin of the grenade numbering SFS82," Police said. Police investigations point Saturday's mob attack at the Race Course Grounds which spread to other areas of Colombo 7 and the murders as the act of a well organised group to sabotage law and order as was the case in July 1983 which was set off by the UNP. President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga on Sunday accused the UNP of trying to recreate a period of terror. At a public rally in Matara, the President pointed the finger at a Kotte MP for his alleged involvement in the grenade attack. Former UNP Secretary and Kotte MP Jinadasa Niyathapala said yesterday: "Today, the President facing all atrocities and machinations of the LTTE and their fellow travellers was graceful enough to settle the current national issue, reaffirming to all communities that they must live in an undivided united Sri Lanka with equal rights." He questioned: "Then what is this guile behaviour and indecent hurry of the Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe to be an acolyte of Prabhakaran and his henchmen in Parliament, thus sacrificing a great party, betraying and insulting all patriotic leaders of the UNP." |
