Indian violin maestro to perform here by Sarath Malalasekera
Maestro violinist Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan of India will perform to the delight of all music lovers at the new Kathiresan hall, Bambalapitiya on December 19. The event is organised by the Lions Club of Dehiwela North as a 'Fund Raiser' for Sri Lanka Anti Narcotics Association (SLANA), said SLANA President S. Ramachandran. Multifaceted Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan has functioned as secretary of "Tyaga Brahma Mahadeva Sabha" for more than 15 years. Every year in the month of January a prestigious music festival "Tyagaraja Utsavam" is held at which carnatic musicians gather to pay homage to saint 'Thiyagaraja by singing saint's hymns dedicated mostly to Lord Rama. Brilliant fine arts flow like a river having different streams or tributaries depending on the bio-neurotical passion of geological environment. One such stream is the one flowing over last four decades in "Bharatha" and in many parts of the world-the music of Violin Maestro Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan. Uniqueness of his stream of music is that he has made this medieval instrument, also known as 'fiddle' as an instrument for playing on music traditional (Carnatic), music devotional and music social to bring out the fineness in tune through the strings of the violin. When U. Thant, a former Secretary-General of the ,UN delivered his vote of thanks to "Bharath Ratna' Srimathi M. S. Subbulaxmi on the occasion of her recital to the UN audience said "Music knowns no geographical boundaries." It implies that music is universal. It also has no beginning or end as much as divinity and nature. "Subbudu" the famous critic on fine arts commented on Kunnakudi's music in the "Indian Express' on December 29, 1994 as follows: "The instrumental music was superb. When his fingers perched on one string to bring out the 'Shadjam' and released a few 'Prayogas' on the other, it has an electrifying tonal effect." In devotional music he has released over 100 records. Kunnakudi's childhood ambition was to bring out film songs on violin but he had to wait for the green signal from his father to play film songs in concert and also to get involved in film music and production. He entered the film world through the film 'Va Raja Va' in 1968, with the blessings of film director A. P. Nagarajan. Later he developed his status as composer and producer. In 1970 he was awarded the best music director for the song "Thirupathi Malaivazhum" in the film "Thirumalai Then Kumari". His superb talent in music is well evidenced by the numerous awards he had from prestigious cultural organizations in India. They are 'Bharata Violin Vadya Bhaskara" given by Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan's spiritual guru, Pudukotai Sadguru Sree Santananda Swamigal of Bhuvaneswari Peedam and "Isai Chakaravarti award by the Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan Rasikar Anubu Kuzhu, Madurai. **** Back **** |
