Colombo BC, Track Masters cager champs

Colombo Basketball Club and Track Masters emerged champions in the men's and women's finals of the Colombo Super League 2004 basketball tournament played at the Colombo Police Courts on Friday.

Colombo BC beat Wattala BC in the men's finals by 67-52 while Track Masters won the women's final when they overcame Hatton National Bank by 58-48.

The highest scorers for Colombo BC were captain Rasika Prabath (18 points), Chaminda Alwis (17) and Chamath Danawansha (15) while the highest scorers for the losers were Pragith Pushpakumara (10), Nireshan Danushka (9) and Pradeep Pushpakumara (9).

The highest scorers for Trackmasters in the women's final were Premila Fernando Dhamushika (25), captain Wijesinghe (14).

The finals followed a thrilling week of basketball.

This prestigious tournament was conducted by the Colombo Basketball Association (CBA), affiliated to the Sri Lanka Basketball Association.

The tournament was sponsored by Mitsui OSK Lines Ltd and Freight Link International Pvt Ltd.

A total of 39 teams took part in the tournament and 110 matches were worked off during the six weeks. The matches were played at St. Joseph's Girls School, Nugegoda, St. Joseph's OMI Seminary, Kohuwela, Otters Court and Depot Police Courts, Bambalapitiya.

In the men's 'A' Division Colombo BC topped the group stage with Air Force BC second and Wattala BC and Colombo Bulls securing the third and fourth places. Wattala BC beat Air Force in the first semi-final at Police Courts while Colombo BC edged past rivals Colombo Bulls by just one point.

The men's 'B' Division final was won by Nugegoda cagers who beat Jayawardenapura BC 81-69. The semi-finals of the 'B' Division was played between Sri Lanka Navy and J'Pura BC while other semi-final was contested between Nugegoda Cagers and David Pieris. A total of 10 teams took part in the 'B' Division competition.

Eleven teams played in the 'C' Division final and All Greens, Royal College, Field Force Youth along with Police BC 'B' qualified for the second round. After a close game, All Greens beat Police by 57-54 to emerge champions. The consolation final was won by Field Force Youth.

In the women's section, six teams took part in the 'B' Division and the champions were Lawrentians with Familians finishing runner up. The consolation final was won by Josephians. In the women's 'A' Division, Track Masters and Hatton National Bank qualified for the finals while David Pieris were pushed to third place.
