by Nadira Gunatilleke President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has re-constituted the Law Commission for a five year term with effect from November 29, 2004. Fourteen members have been appointed in terms of Section 2 of the Law Commission Act No. 3 of 1969. The members are Dr. Lakshman Marasinghe, Attorney-at-law, Chairman, Nalin Abeysekara, PC, K. Kanag-iswaran, PC, Nihal Jayamanne, PC, D.P.Mendis, PC, C. R. de Silva, PC, Solicitor General, Wijayadasa Rajapakse, PC, Dr.Deepika Udagama, Ms.Dhara Wijayatilake, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Justice and Judicial Reform, Dr. Harsha Cabral, Attorney-at-law, Dr. K. H. J. R. Wickramaratne, PC, L. C. Seneviratne, PC, Ranjith Abeysuriya, PC and Dr. Mario Gomez. Chairman of the Law Commission Dr.Lakshman Marasinghe said that the public can send proposals to the Law Commission situated at No. 93, Issipathana Mawatha, Colombo 5. Dr. Marasinghe said that the Law Commission will go to the doorsteps of all local Bar Associations numbering around 25 and hold workshops. The Commission has worked out a number of programmes and will put out a working paper. These working papers will be made available for researchers and others who are interested. The Commission will also carry out in-depth studies and put out papers. Attention will be also paid to the DNA factor, law's delays, the reasons behind the law's delays, Evidence Ordinance, aspects of criminal and civil law, mediation, criminal and civil law proceeders, data protection, the protection of witnesses, the question of victims of crimes, question of sentence and firearms related offenses. The Commission also hopes to keep in touch with the Law. |
