by Rajmi Manatunga Transport Minister Felix Perera has directed the police to immediately arrest those responsible for Tuesday's attack on the Kirindiwela CTB depot and its buses. Minister Perera told the Daily News that swift measures will be taken to bring the groups responsible for the attack to justice. According to the Transport Ministry, a CTB bus travelling to Hanwella and employees and property at the Kirindiwela depot became targets of attack on Tuesday allegedly by a group of private bus employees. "We believe that the cause for this incident is the deploying of an additional CTB bus on the route. However, we will not let the private bus monopoly undermine the state bus service through such acts. It is our policy that both these services should operate on a competitive basis," he said. Meanwhile, CTB Chairman Dr. I. S. Jayaratne said that Tuesday's incident in Kirindiwela was a clear indication that the state bus service has improved since the UPFA Government came into power thus threatening the monopoly of private bus operators. With the breakdown of the CTB, many bus routes allocated to the CTB have now been taken over by private buses. According to CTB employees' unions, this is the fifteenth time within two months that CTB buses and depots were attacked by rival groups. |
