The Ministry of Public Security, Law and Order has instructed the Police and Government Agencies not to agree to any requests made by individuals or organisations not to sing or play the national anthem and hoist the national flag at state functions or other common events held in any part of the country, the ministry said yesterday. The Secretary of the Ministry, Tilak Ranaviraja has informed this in a communication to the Inspector General of Police, Chandra Fernando. Ranaviraja's letter to IGP states: "Any requests made by individuals or organisations to the effect that the National Flag of Sri Lanka should not be hoisted and the National Anthem should not be sung or played at sports meets, opening of buildings or projects or at other ceremonial national events held in any part of the country should not be agreed to by the Police or Government Agencies." "If a request is made at any ceremonial event that the hoisting of the National Flag and the recital of the National Anthem should not take place such a request should not be agreed to even if the ceremony has to be cancelled as a result" |
